IS THIS YOUR FIRST TIME PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT? OR MAYBE IT’S YOUR SECOND YEAR AND YOU WANT TO IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS? HOW ABOUT SWITCHING TO SAXOPHONE FROM ANOTHER INSTRUMENT? WE HAVE THAT AND MORE, THIS CAMP IS FOR YOU!

MUSIC WORLD IS ALSO NOW OFFERING A BEGINNING STRING CLASS FOR VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO AND BASS! COME JOIN MR. MESSLING AS HE TEACHES BEGINNERS HOW TO PLAY AND MAKE MUSIC THIS SUMMER!

TO TOP IT ALL OFF, THE END OF THE CAMP WILL CONCLUDE WITH A ICE CREAM BAR PARTY AND FINAL CONCERT IN THE PARK BY THE PARTICIPATING CLASSES. COME JOIN THE FUN!

TEACHERS

Ryan Messling – Band

Ryan Messling has been playing bass for 16 years and started playing bass in fifth grade at Chester Elementary School. Ryan played bass all throughout Middle School and High School and performed in many ensembles including the Concert Choir, Jazz Choir, Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and Jazz Band. As an active member of the Spokane Local 105 musicians union, Ryan performed in many theatres in the Spokane area including the Lakecity Playhouse and Christian Youth Theatre.
After High School he attended the Lionel Hampton School of Music at the University of Idaho and got his undergraduate degree in Instrumental Music Education. Since his undergrad Ryan has taught in both Vancouver Public Schools and Battle Ground Public Schools.
Ryan student taught with Danielle Armstrong and Greg McKelvey in Battle Ground Public Schools. He is currently the band director at Prairie High School and has been since 2016. Jazz has always been one of Ryan’s passion from a young age and how has the opportunity to direct his High School jazz band which has received high accolades. He is very excited to be in the Vanport Jazz Band and looks forward to giggin with the band in the future!

Cary Pederson – Band

Cary Pederson has been instructing in the local NW area for over a decade. His primary area of study has been woodwinds and music pedagogy. He has taught at various Washington and Oregon Public Schools (most recently at The Madeleine School in Portland, OR, Mountain View High School in Vancouver, WA, Astoria Middle and High School in Oregon), Portland State University, as well as, private lesson instruction.
He has several years of conducting experience through many venues; some of which include guest conductor at Discovery Middle School for Kathy Vogt; direction from Dr. William Tuttle; lead director for the PSU Chamber Winds Ensemble; sectional director for Columbia River High School; and guest director for the PSU Wind Ensemble under the former direction of Dr. Denise Grant.
Cary performs for many local ensembles and holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in music performance from Portland State University. He is currently finishing his Master’s in Music Education.
Cary owns and directs the VanPort Jazz big band ensemble, based in Vancouver, WA. The 17 member professional ensemble performs for Portland5 Performing Arts (Newmark Theater), Tony Starlight, Clark College Big Band Bash and many other venue locations throughout the NW.
Recent performances for Cary include soloist for the Hood River Symphony Orchestra; NYC comic strip producer Shannon Wheeler’s “Too Much Coffee Man;” Oregon Symphonic Band; Oregon Jazz and Wine Festival; Portland State University Opera Productions; North Coast Community Symphony; the Vancouver Pops Symphony, the SW Washington Wind Symphony and VanPort Jazz.

Rebecca Olson Towers – Flute

Rebecca Olson Towers has a passion for music and kids.  She has taught general music at the elementary school level, worked as a nanny, and continues to teach private flute lessons for kids of all ages.  She is a freelance performer and a current member of the Con Grazia Wind Quintet, the Oregon Chamber Players Quartet, and the Sirens Trio.  Rebecca received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in flute performance and pedagogy from Central Washington University.  This will be her 13th year teaching the flute class at Music World’s Summer Band Camp.
